1. Review your marketing strategy

The first step is to sit down and review your current marketing strategy. One of the smartest things you can do during a recession is to figure out what’s working and what isn’t in your strategy.

This is the time to be honest with yourself and make changes where necessary. If you’re not sure where to start, there are plenty of resources available online or you could even hire a consultant to help you out.

2. Reduce your marketing budget

No one wants to think about a recession when the stock market is doing well and everyone is enjoying their lives. However, as business owners, it’s important that we are proactive in our planning and preparation for when things don’t go so well. 

If you’re like most businesses, your marketing budget is probably one of the first places you’ll need to cut back when times are tough. But that doesn’t mean you have to completely eliminate your marketing efforts. There are plenty of ways to market your business on a shoestring budget.

3. Get creative with your marketing

Now is the time to get creative with your marketing. If you can’t afford to buy advertising, look for other ways to get your business name out there. Social media is a great way to connect with potential customers and it’s free! Get involved in online forums and start blogging about your business.

4. Focus on your existing customers

Your existing customers are your bread and butter, so make sure you’re doing everything you can to keep them happy. Also, existing customers are more likely the ones to stick with you during a recession. So instead of thinking about acquiring new customers, make the best of what you already have and focus on how to keep them satisfied. Offer loyalty programs, discounts, or other incentives to encourage them to keep doing business with you.

5. Keep your business visible

As a business owner, you know that recessions can be a difficult time. Sales may decline, and you may have to lay off employees. However, there is one thing you can do to position your business for success when the economy rebounds: keep your business visible. 

You have to continue marketing your products or services.  Even if sales are down, it’s important to keep your name out there. The more people know about your company, the more likely they are to do business with you when things improve. 

Maintain your website and social media presence, Make sure your website is up-to-date and that your contact information is easily accessible. Keep your social media accounts active by posting regularly. If you have a brick-and-mortar location, keep it clean and inviting.

 6. Don’t give up!

Times may be tough, but that doesn’t mean your business has to suffer. There are plenty of ways you can try to survive this.  Remember, recessions don’t last forever and your business will eventually rebound. In the meantime, stay positive!
